Contract Grant Writer
The time commitment for this contract position is up to 15 hours a month. The exact hours worked each month will be determined by the grants that need to be written/managed each month. Much of the work will take place online through email and within grant document correspondence (collaborative grant writing within saved grant applications). There is no required time to be in the office, but occasional meetings may take place in the office.

Essential Functions

- Research and identify grant prospects. The writer should be able to craft clear, concise, and compelling narratives that effectively communicate our nonprofit’s mission and impact.
- Determines proposal concept by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs, studying requests for proposal (RFPs), attending strategy meetings, participating in relevant staff meetings, and developing a strong understanding of the organization’s work, programs, priorities, innovations, history, mission, and results.
- Maintains grant deadlines and program tracker and enters relevant information into the organization’s database. Meets proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information and shares information with the development team, the Development Director, Executive Director, and Contract CFO. Coordinates requirements with various program staff and contributes
proposal status information. - Displays excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated history of appropriately handling communication with potential and existing grantors.
- Drafts, revises, and produces high-quality grant proposals and reports for multiple stakeholders by using templates and following proposal-writing standards, including readability, consistency, and tone. Assembles information, including project nature, objectives/outcomes/deliverables, implementation, methods, timetable, staffing, budget, standards of performance, and evaluation. Presents proposals in creative or required formats. Obtains approvals by reviewing proposals with key stakeholders, including various program staff and the Development Director and Executive Director.
- Drafts content related to grant partners for general external communications such as newsletter articles, blog posts, and social media content.
- Assists with grant database management; can pull reports to meet various funder queries.
Non-Essential Functions – Other duties as assigned
These are tasks that are not critical to the primary responsibilities of the job. While they may be part of the role, they are not the main focus. For example, non-essential functions might include attending team-building activities, assisting other departments with tasks, helping with office organization and administrative tasks, engaging potential special projects, covering for colleague absences and handling new tasks that come up due to organizational structure.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as required or requested.
Qualifications
Qualifications are a combination of education, related experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The judgment of an acceptable equivalent combination of qualifications is the responsibility of management.
Education Level
College Degree with certifications in or 3+ years of experience in successful grant writing are most desired.
Experience and Certifications
Able to use Microsoft office suite.

- Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, multi-priority environment; exhibit consistent usage of effective time management skills and appropriate resource management; communicate interferences and delays to supervisor.

- Provides accurate grant proposal and report results that are thought-out, complete; exhibits a high standard for excellence, attention to detail; relays information that is sufficiently detailed and provides the desired effect from grantees and development staff.
- Ability to relate well with all types of people, attentive and active listener; patience to hear others out and build rapport with dignity and tact; ability to effectively manage change and support and promote acceptance; encouraging, motivating, clear and effective communicator.
Physical Requirements
This position requires:
- Normal periods of sitting and standing in an office environment are possible.
- Extended period of sitting at a workstation/desk in an office environment.
Working Conditions
Most work is performed virtually in a home office setting. Office space for grant work can be provided as needed.
